Gunmen suspected of being bandits entered Zaki Akpuuna 1 and Diom townships in Mbaterem District, Ukum Governorate, Benue State, killing 24 residents.
They entered the communities around 8 a.m. on Saturday July 8, 2023.
Residents said the attackers also burned down several houses in nearby villages.
The President of the Council, Mr. Kartyo Tyoumbur, confirmed that 24 bodies had been found in the two villages attacked.
“I learned that after the attack on Akpuuna and Diom, the armed gang went to Tine Nune community on the Zaki Biam-Wukari road, where they were confronted by the army”, a- he declared. “Although no one knows how many of them were killed, I believe some of them were neutralized during this exchange.”
The president, who condemned the attack, said no one knew the motive.
State Police Command spokeswoman SP Catherine Anene confirmed the attack in a statement on Saturday.
“Today, 08/07/2023, around noon, a Militia gang entered Akpuna Village, Ukum LGA in Benue State and fired sporadically.
Upon receiving this information, police teams, in cooperation with other security agencies, rushed to the scene and found the bandits, who were eventually driven back,” the PPRO said.
“Eight bodies were found at the scene, while many more injured people were taken to hospital for treatment. The operation in the area is underway.”
